Four principles for groupware design

چکیده
Groupware design is at a stage where identification, clarification and validation of best practice is critical if its potential is to be realised. This paper examines and records the major causes of groupware failure, and provides four groupware design principles that encapsulate the problems and guide design teams around them. The principles provide an extendable framework that is a synthesis of design lessons recorded in CSCW literature.

Four principles for groupware design: a foundation for participative development
Participatory design amalgamates the expertise of interdisciplinary specialists with the taskspecific expertise of end-users. Groupware design is widely recognised as benefiting from participative approaches. Recognition of this ideal, however, does not preclude the failure of groupware design due to poor communication and inadequate understanding between participants. We provide a grounding in...
متن کاملSupporting Creative Group Processes: Design Principles for Appropriate Groupware
Creative work is often conducted in distributed groups. Therefore information exchange is frequently facilitated by groupware systems. However, group work suffers from several losses such as information overload, production blocking, free riding, evaluation apprehension and production matching and yet has not been tailored to the need of creative work. In order to reduce these losses and to bes...

متن کاملFostering End-User Participation with the Oregon Groupware Development Process
This position paper outlines the Oregon Groupware Development Process, which fosters user involvement in all stages of groupware development. It combines several – up to now often unrelated – design techniques such as iterative development, tailoring, or participatory design. INTRODUCING SUMMARY Groupware applications are becoming more and more important in the context of distributed collaborat...
متن کاملAn Early Evaluation of Technical Mechanisms Supporting Negotiations in Groupware
A set of design principles for groupware will be proposed. As some of these principles conflict with each other, a "suitability for conflict regulation" will be introduced as an additional principle which proposes to design groupware so that users can regulate conflicts among themselves. According to this principle, we propose negotiability as a technical mechanism to support users regulating c...
